Hydrogen Fuel Cell Automobile

Honda, a major Japanese car manufacturer, has taken the lead in producing the first hydrogen fuel cell automobile. This four-seater that is to be known as the FCX Clarity is designed to not emit any polluting gases and will be powered up by hydrogen fuel cells. It will run on electricity which will be produced when hydrogen is combined with oxygen and in the process will emit only water vapour.

Hydrogen fuel cell – greater efficiency

According to Honda, their hydrogen fuel cell automobile will prove to be thrice as efficient as the most efficient petrol driven car. The first such hydrogen fuel cell automobile is expected to come out in three year's time (from the year 2008) and there will be two hundred such models that will be offered to the general public.

Cost efficiency, a problem?

There are many who are skeptical that such a hydrogen fuel cell automobile will prove to be cost efficient. Critics of this hydrogen fuel cell automobile suggest that hydrogen is too expensive and producing it will also be a major headache. They contend that hydrogen will still have to be obtained from fossil fuels and that this will negate any benefit that the manufacturer says such automobiles will provide.

Carbon emissions

In fact, experts that have analyzed the impact of a hydrogen fuel cell automobile on the environment claim that fuel technologies will actually produce higher carbon dioxide emissions as compared to those produced by petrol and even diesel powered cars.

Available on lease

Celebrities are lining up to be the first to own such a hydrogen fuel cell automobile. When such hydrogen fuel cell automobiles will first be offered to the public, it will be available on lease and not outright purchase. It is expected to be released in California before eventually being released in Japan.

The first such hydrogen fuel cell automobile will be manufactured on the first committed production line which is designed to only produce fuel cell cars for the Japanese market. The day that this hydrogen fuel cell automobile is offered to the world will mark a very important day in so far as fuel cell technologies go. It will bring us a little closer to producing effectively priced and efficient hydrogen fuel cell automobiles.

Honda thinks that at the beginning it will be able to lease out some dozens of these vehicles to buyers in the US and in Japan and will then produce another two hundred more units in the next three years. These hydrogen fuel cell automobiles will be available for lease at a cost of about three hundred pounds per year.

The FCX Clarity is designed along the lines of the first generation of hydrogen fuel cell cars that Honda has already produced and which is called the FCX Concept car. About thirty-four such hydrogen fuel cell automobiles have already been produced by Honda and of these only ten are currently in use.

However, Honda is not alone in producing an efficient and effective hydrogen fuel cell automobile because others including Toyota and Volkswagen are also in the fray.
