Modern hydrogen fuel technology is progressing along desired lines and there is in fact a British based company that has taken steps to develop improved storage systems to handle hydrogen fuel. This company that goes by the name of Cella Energy has started to develop a technology that will help to store hydrogen in a cheap and practical manner.

Cella Energy is a company that is based in Oxford is working in association with the University College London as well as University of Oxford to create micro-fibers that contain hydrogen at very low pressure. In fact, these micro-fibers are able to contain the same amount of hydrogen as a high pressure tank is able to hold and furthermore, these micro-fibers can be poured as well as pumped in the form of liquid and can be refilled in the same frequency as we do when using gasoline.

Many Promises

A look at modern hydrogen fuel technology will show that there are many promises being made regarding this fuel but it is still anyone's guess whether this basic element will be able to provide power to run our cars, homes and to reduce global warming. The good news is that with improved and advanced hydrogen fuel technology, it is possible to use hydrogen fuel to power up a vehicle.

More efficient

The modern combustion engine can in fact easily be converted to run on different fuels including hydrogen fuel. The good news is that hydrogen fuel cells which will power up a vehicle are actually twice or even thrice as efficient as gasoline. In addition, hydrogen fuel offers a clean option that is not going to result in emissions of any pollutants and it also works on fewer moving parts. The right kind of hydrogen fuel technology will also help to create quieter and more vibration-free vehicles.

Hydrogen is found in abundance in our universe and can easily be obtained from coal, natural gas, and crude oil and more. However, in order to obtain it in a pollution-free manner it has to be extracted from water. Atoms of hydrogen and oxygen that are present in water can be split up very easily as well as cleanly through use of electrolysis. When hydrogen is obtained, it can then be compressed so that it can be stored and used in fuel cells.

The pioneer of hydrogen fuel technology was a physicist from Wales called William Grove who discovered and invented hydrogen fuel cells way back in 1842. He managed to combine hydrogen as well as oxygen by reversing the electrolysis process and succeeded in producing electricity whose by-product happened to be pure water.

Those who are developing modern hydrogen fuel technology are the first to explain that hydrogen is safe to use – even though hydrogen is extremely flammable but then that is also the case with gasoline. The good news is that hydrogen is not explosive by nature and if it is not exposed to ignition, it will not ignite on its own. However, petrol can ignite itself at temperatures ranging from 228 to 501 degrees Celsius.

The main challenges facing those who are developing hydrogen fuel technology are that to extract hydrogen out of water requires a lot of energy. In addition, it is hard to store hydrogen at room temperature on account of the fact that it must be compressed to a great degree. Lastly, fuel cell technologies are in a nascent stage and so the cells are not just fragile but also very expensive.
